Alva Walmart is starting off the new year by saving lives through blood donation with Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI).
All healthy adults, 16 and older* are encouraged to donate blood 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, January 7, at 914 E. Oklahoma Boulevard.
Blood donors at the Alva Walmart blood drive will receive a pair of OBI fleece gloves and free health screenings.
“With the start of a new year and unanticipated weather, blood donations typically decline in the winter months,” said John Armitage, Oklahoma Blood Institute president and CEO. “But the need for blood is constant, and patients in our community count on volunteer donors to fulfill that need.”
All OBI donors are also encouraged to download OBI’s free iPhone app. With the GiVE BLOOD app, donors can count down until their next donation, find the nearest OBI blood donation location and make an appointment. All donors who show they have downloaded the GiVE BLOOD app will receive a free iPhone cover.

The “Mom” in question, an economy-fighting spirited activist for “economical shopping”, is herself a mother.
Coupons for Walmart are just one of the various cost-saving methods propounded by Coupon Mom, or Stephanie Nelson to many, and she’s been doing this ever since 2004, when the recession hadn’t even been thought of.

Sydney promised a New Year's Eve party better than any since the 2000 Olympics.
Judging by the crowd's reaction, the city delivered in dazzling fashion.
"Stunning, beautiful," said Cinthya Romo, 32, a Sydney-based interpreter from Chile, as she looked skyward from the Opera House forecourt.

"Sydney's best show yet," remarked taxi driver George Stamp, who sacrificed a bumper payday to enjoy the show with his children and 1.5 million others.
As the clock ticked midnight the familiar rumble-and-bang of fireworks sounded and streams of incandescent colour shot into the heavens, illuminating the city.
A pulsing X on the Sydney Harbour Bridge reflected the Make Your Mark theme, replaced by a gold hand - the feature of the extravaganza.

UU.S online news: So Bill Simmons showed up at the Thunder-Nets game Wednesday in Oklahoma City. For those of us, myself included, who enjoy Simmons’ columns and podcasts but also want him to fully embrace the Thunder, a reaction of maybe 10 percent of the intensity of the Double Rainbow Guy swept over us.
Why was Simmons here? What did his presence mean? Why does it matter to me and people like me that he was at the Thunder game, and what he thinks about the team and city?
Simmons is the most popular sports columnist in the U.S., and by extension the world. (I’d be surprised for various reasons if China and India, the only two countries more populous than the U.S., have sports columnists as widely read as Simmons.) I suspect that it’s not even close. That also makes him the most polarizing, thanks to the combined natures of sportswriting and popularity.

Idiot with a Tripod is the final product of tons of snow, stuck cars, and Jamie Stuart from the massive storm that hit the Northeast recently. That being said, famed film critic Roger Ebert loves it. The short film is only three minutes long, and is just about snow. Lots of it. Snow in Queens more like it. Snow in the sense that dogs can’t go outside, cars are stuck and it was all caught on film.
Jamie Stuart stated he took a few shots outside, spending no more than than a hour and a half in the snow at one time. Then the next day, edited and uploaded the Idiot with a Tripod.

The Army Black Knights emerged from the SMU Mustangs’ backyard with their third-ever bowl win and first since 1985. The game was played in SMU’s stadium, but was named the Armed Forces Bowl, so it’s hard to tell who actually had home field advantage.
Army gave up yards like wild, but forced three turnovers and held two SMU drives to field goal attempts, both of which were booted astray. SMU QB Kyle Padron shot over 300 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two picks and lost a strip-sack on the opening drive that Army returned for a touchdown. Zach Line contributed the run to SMU’s run-and-shoot, with his 103 yards somehow the game’s highest rushing total.

Former Simon and Schuster Editor-in-Chief Robert Gottlieb pieces together the person and the persona in Sarah: The Life of Sarah Bernhardt. Although it’s a biography, Gottlieb’s book reads like a novel, with highly digestible anecdotes and propulsive narration.
Gottlieb admits researching Bernhardt's life was a difficult task. Considered the most famous person in the world, Bernhardt was a dramatist who preferred story to fact. Biographers can't look to her for accurate accounts of dates, places or even birth parents. Perhaps this is why Gottlieb’s is the first English-language biography of Bernhardt.

Rest assured: Owen Wilson is still alive. So is Eddie Murphy. But you could be excused for thinking otherwise if Twitter serves as one of your primary sources of information.
In what's becoming a regular occurrence, a hoax spread across the social media site on December 29 claimed that both Hollywood stars had met with untimely deaths, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The Wilson death rumor started via a news report from an operation called Global Associated News. The site claimed that the Little Fockers star crashed into a tree and died while snowboarding in Zermatt, Switzerland. The story quickly went viral, but if readers clicked on the "Home" section of the article, it redirected to a site called Fake a Wish that allows users to "enter a celebrity name to create a list of fake articles about them."

Ah, the horror of clipping coupons. What was once considered a tradition, coupon clipping service has quickly been replaced by digital outlets such as Groupon.com. Long gone are the days (for most of us anyway) of clipping physical paper coupons and many people are now looking for free coupons online as well as Grocery Coupons in other places other than the local newspaper.
One popular coupon saving outlet online is Coupon Mom as well as Groupon. These websites offer printable coupons that can be browsed, printed and used in person. Other websites simply bypass this function by offering membership cards, typically for free at stores such as Safeway, Kroger, and even Walmart.

The Kennedy Center Honors was telecast last night and Hank Steuver was less than impressed:
But even bookended with star-studded tributes to super-famous Oprah Winfrey and Paul McCartney, this year's show feels too perfunctory. There is nothing wrong with it, really, save for the sense of duty that makes the Kennedy Center Honors somehow so uninteresting to a larger world. Judging from this sluggish telecast, no one seemed to be one bit more thrilled to be there than the minimum gratitude and glee required by Kennedy Center fiat.

I feel like the NFL might have fallen into something by pushing back the Vikings-Eagles game to tonight. It brings up the question of why the league does not play more Tuesday night games.
I know it gives the teams a short week coming up. The thing is the league already schedules Thursday games. A team playing on Thursday has three days of rest if it played on the previous Sunday. A team playing on Tuesday has four days of rest to the next Sunday.
I also think there is demand. People like football. That is why you can see small conference college football games regularly on ESPN during weeknights of the college football season. I don't think NFL fans would complain about another primetime game.

While Webb's cool, calm, clutch performance in his first start made a lot of people say "Tavarez who," (referring to the Vikings other QB Tavarez Jackson) and cemented him as their new signal caller, it was a very bad offensive game plan that prevented Vick and the Eagles from playing up to expectations.
