Tonight the Poet of the Common Man, Merle Haggard will be honored with a Kennedy Center Honors award for his contributions to American music. Well, actually he received the award on December 5th, but the ceremony itself from Washington DC will air tonight on CBS (as they say, check local listings for times).

He will be honored by musical performances from Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Jamey Johnson, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, wait Kid Rock? (which one of these things is not like the others?) and his long-time friend and fellow Kennedy Center Honoree, Willie Nelson.

The actual ceremonies for the Kennedy Center Honours took place earlier in the month but were broadcast in a two-hour special on Tuesday December 28, 2010. Being honoured this year are country legend Merle HaggardMerle Haggard, talk show queen Oprah, rock legend Sir Paul McCartneyPaul McCartney, composer Jerry HermanJerry Herman, and dance choreographer Bill T. JonesBill T. Jones.

Oprah is the first woman to own her own television and film studio. In that package Oprah says that she believes the world is a school and our lives the classroom. Nineteen ninety five Kennedy Center Honouree Sidney Portier comes out and begins by saying, “my friend Oprah,”
