New Yorkers were shocked to wake up to the news of a young Citi banker, Jessica Fashano, taking her life on Saturday by jumping off the roof of an Upper West Side building.
Fashano's passion in life was clearly charity. She helped raise money for The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund, for the Acumen Fund (which makes small-business loans to people in developing countries) and for Harboring Hearts Housing, which provides affordable accommodation to cardiac patients.
The 27-year-old left no note, though friends and family said she had been suffering from depression.
Her body was found at 8:13 a.m. on Saturday, in an internal courtyard of Trump Place - a luxury apartment complex on Riverside Boulevard where Fashano did not live. Surveillance videos captured her walking into the Westside apartment block that morning, 16 blocks away from her own home on 52nd St.
The last person to see her alive was a Trump Place resident, who rode in the elevator with her. "Dressed for the cold in Ugg boots and a winter jacket, Ms. Fashano asked the woman how to get to the roof — which has views of the Hudson River and New Jersey, where Ms. Fashano grew up. The resident... said Ms. Fashano seemed alert and aware," the New York Times reported.

Douglas says he will learn in January if his cancer has been eliminated. Doctors have told him there is an 80-per-cent cure rate.

He says his cancer diagnosis has brought him closer to his 93-year-old father, Kirk Douglas. The two had a strained relationship for many years, but “he really made an effort” after the diagnosis, Douglas says. “He was back here almost 10 days. He came over everyday. He was great.”

Douglas says that when he was growing up, his father was angry and often absent.

“In those key years, when Kirk was doing five movies a year, if we saw him it was only out of his guilt,” Douglas says.

He also acknowledges that he may have repeated that pattern with his own son, Cameron Douglas, 31, who was recently jailed on drug-related charges.

“I'm sure it's not easy, either, being a third generation,” Douglas says. “Kirk was all-consumed, was overworked. Probably like myself at a certain time in my life.”

Douglas also reflects on his recent difficulties with ex-wife Diandra Douglas, whose bid to claim half of his earnings from Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps was dismissed in a New York court earlier this month.

LONDON -- U.S. allies around the world have been briefed by American diplomats about an expected release of classified U.S. files by the WikiLeaks website that is likely to cause international embarrassment and could damage some nations' relations with the United States.

The release of hundreds of thousands of State Department cables is expected this weekend, although WikiLeaks has not been specific about the timing. The cables are thought to include private, candid assessments of foreign leaders and governments and could erode trust in the U.S. as a diplomatic partner.

In Britain, Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman, Steve Field, said Friday that the government had been told of "the likely content of these leaks" by U.S. Ambassador Louis Susman. Field declined to say what Britain had been warned to expect.

"I don't want to speculate about precisely what is going to be leaked before it is leaked," Field said.

In Washington, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said U.S. diplomats were continuing the process of warning governments around the world about what might be in the documents. Many fear the cables will embarrass the United States and its allies, and reveal sensitive details of how the U.S. conducts relations with other countries.

"We are all bracing for what may be coming and condemn WikiLeaks for the release of classified material," he said. "It will place lives and interests at risk. It is irresponsible."

The Obama administration on Friday warned that the WikiLeaks release would endanger "lives and interests."

Italy's foreign minister, Franco Frattini, said he spoke Friday with the U.S. State Department, which told him that there would be documents regarding Italy in the leak, "but the content can't be anticipated."
