Vegemite is the popular dark brown spread made from yeast extract that hails Australia and is often the target of many food jokes. It is said that people either love Vegemite, or hate it. Rarely is there any opinion in between. I, for one, have tried it and can’t say I like it, but I don’t fault those who do. To some Vegemite is more desirable than peanut butter or nutella and is eaten regularly spread on toast, crumpets or biscuits. The newest Vegemite product to emerge lately is Vegemite Gelato. According to recent reports, the Gelatissimo ice cream chain is offering this exclusive flavor from January 24 – 30th in their stores.
So far the reaction to the new flavor has been mixed. Vegetime is said to have an umami flavor similar to beef bouillon, a questionable flavor to swirl into ice cream to say the least. If you have a jar of Vegemite on hand I might recommend spreading it on some of these delicious breads or breakfast pastries:
