Chinese box office takings surged 64 percent to 10.2 billion Chinese yuan ($1.5 billion) in 2010, although film officials say the figure still lags more developed markets and urged local filmmakers to make better movies that can compete with Hollywood blockbusters like "Avatar" and "Inception."

China's Film Bureau also said in a report issued late last week that the country added 313 movie theaters and 1,533 new screens last year, for a total of just over 6,200 screens.

The box office figures were boosted by the huge success of "Avatar." The James Cameron 3-D sci-fi epic was the biggest hit in China last year with a total take of $204 million. The top-grossing Chinese film in 2010 was the Feng Xiaogang summer earthquake epic "Aftershock," which earned $100 million. Jiang Wen's political satire "Let the Bullets Fly," released in December, was also a big local hit, with Chinese media saying its latest earnings have surpassed $75 million.
The Film Bureau, however, said the Chinese box office is still developing and urged local directors to improve the quality of their work.

The GOP, which won control of the House in midterm elections, stands to gain more seats as a result of the Census 2010 results, which show a population shift from blue states to red.Twelve seats will shift as a result of the 2010 results, said Census Bureau director Robert Groves on Tuesday. Texas will gain four new representatives, and Florida will get two, while Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington will gain one each.
Of these winners, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah are red states, according to political scientist Charlie Cook’s Partisan Voting Index, which measures how strongly state populations are attracted to one party or another.
Nevada is a blue state – but barely so, according to the Partisan Voting Index. Only Washington among the gainers of seats is solidly Democratic.
States losing representatives, by contrast, disproportionately lean Democratic. Those who will have fewer House members are Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan is getting hitched to fiancee Jennifer McDaniel after applying for a marriage license in Florida yesterday. The 57 year old WWE icon proposed to Jennifer, 35, in December of 2009, just five months after finalizing his divorce from long time wife Linda Hogan.

The new couple will marry ahead of the 2011 New Year.  The marriage license expires on January 11, 2011 so the duo will need to make it official soon …or buy another freakin’ license

    * Oakland Raiders quarterback Kyle Boller and wife, former Miss California Carrie Prejean are expecting a baby, reports the LA Times. Prejean tells Fox 411, “I’m due in May on my grandmother’s birthday. She recently passed away, so that’s very special to us.” It will be their first child.

    * Marie Osmond told Oprah that the suicide of her son, Michael Blosil, was the hardest thing she had ever been through. According to Popeater, Osmond talked about missing his phone call on the night he died. “She said that she was going through a costume change when her phone rang. ‘I couldn't get to it,’ she admitted. Later when she called him back, he didn't pick up."

    * Film critic and interviewer Gene Shalit has quit the “Today” show. His final appearance was on Thursday's broadcast. Why did he leave? The 40-year veteran of the morning show released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter saying, "It's enough already.
