NFL legend Brett Favre has retired from the sport for a third time.
Favre, 41, previously quit in 2008 and 2009 but returned on each occasion - firstly with the New York Jets and then with the Minnesota Vikings.
But the quarterback, holder of most consecutive starts in the sport (321, including play-offs), insisted: "I know it's time, and that's OK. It is."
Favre sat out his final game through injury as the Vikings lost 20-13 to Detroit finish last in the NFC North.
The victory was not enough to see Detroit into the play-offs however, with the wildcard weekend set for the weekend of 8/9 January.

For most, however, the dream ends without being fulfilled, often after high school or college. Adam Powell, a senior on the men’s swimming and diving team, isn’t ready to let his dreams slip away without a fight. Powell is planning on taking a year off after graduation to attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in the 50 meter freestyle.
If you’ve walked around Morningside Heights, you probably recognize the name Adam Powell. Powell’s grandfather was Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., a former New York City congressman whose name graces Seventh Avenue north of Central Park.
