NASA Marks 25th Anniversary of the Challenger Disaster: According to the internet Media, NASA is remembering three major tragedies in its history this week, starting with the 25th anniversary of the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger on Friday.
"This year marks the 25th anniversary of the loss of the Challenger—a tragedy that caused us to completely rethink our systems and processes as we worked to make the shuttle safer," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in an AFP reportAlong with deputy administrator Lori Garver, Bolden honored the lives of those lost in Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia Thursday morning.
"The nation will never forget Jan. 28, 1986, nor its indelible images," Bolden added.
Challenger's entire crew was killed when the shuttle exploded just 73 seconds after its launch, 46,000 feet in the air. The explosion was broadcast on live television.

In 2003, a faulty heat shield caused Columbia to disintegrate as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere, killing seven astronauts. A fire aboard Apollo 1 proved fatal for the vessel's crew of three in 1967. This mission was the first of NASA's manned trips to the moon.

"Safety is the number one priority at NASA and the shuttle launch schedule does not drive discussions or decisions when issues arise," a NASA spokesperson told PCMag. "That is reiterated often and is apparent in media events about the issues."

Produced by Montreal’s Green Ground Productions, it’s the high-art side of Canada’s Sundance roster, while at the other extreme is Jason Eisener’s tongue-in-cheek exploitation feature Hobo With A Shotgun, about a homeless vigilante shooting down the bad guys.
Based on fake trailers within Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s film Grindhouse, the film has long been building word-of-mouth ahead of its showing at Sundance’s midnight program of films.

"You don't expect to play on a day like this, but that's how it goes sometimes," Hanie said.
Two interceptions, one for a touchdown by Green Bay nose tackle B.J. Raji - "one of those 'oops' type of things," Hanie said - the other on fourth and five with 47 seconds remaining, ended the Bears' hopes. Still, his performance - 13 of 20, 153 yards, a touchdown and a 65.2 rating - got him a lot of praise from both locker rooms. Hanie understood perfectly well just how unusual that is for a losing quarterback.
"Throw two picks," he said. "That's the only time you're going to get congratulations [for that], when they don't expect you to do anything."

Polaroid’s new Gray Label products were promoted by Lady Gaga during CES 2011. That was an excellent, headline making move on the part of the company.
Lady Gaga was actually tapped to be the Creative Director of the new Gray Label products. The new line consists of the GL10–a wireless photo printer, a GL30 instant camera that prints the picture just like an old school Polaroid, and GL20 sunglasses–which are most amazing, because they have two OLED screens and a camera
The GL10 will connect via Bluetooth or USB cable, and it will print pictures wirelessly from nearly any device. The new printer will hit the shelves in May and will cost about $149.
The updated retro inspired GL30 instant camera will print a picture as soon as you take it. Amazingly, Polaroid’s Zink technology makes the print without using ink. Another plus is that it can double as a photo frame. It should be available by next Christmas.
The GL20 sunglasses are obviously the cherry on top here with Polaroid’s new Gray Label line of products. You can actually take pictures while wearing the glasses.

"There are many ways to spend limited education dollars, but a library is one of the best investments," he said inside the upgraded library of University City High, a newly transformed "Promise Academy."
Beginning in the late 1990s, at a time of huge budget deficits, the school district began eliminating librarian positions and failed to replace those who retired or found other jobs, district officials said.
In 1987, every school had a library staffed with a certified librarian and trained library assistant, Jordan said. Four years later, only 176 certified librarians and 114 assistants were employed by the district.
Today, just 72 librarians and 26 assistants remain, he said.
Of the district's 258 schools, only 120 have libraries, and only half of the high schools have libraries.
On the other hand, Jordan said, each of the 26 state correctional institutions is required to have a fully stocked library staffed with a librarian with a master's degree.
"If we mandated that every school provided children with fully stocked, technology-rich libraries, there wouldn't be as many inmates in need of prison libraries," he said.
Studies have shown that students with access to libraries typically show significant improvement in reading, spelling, math and problem-solving. Jordan noted that Pennsylvania System of School Assessment scores in reading are 10 to 15 points higher in schools with libraries staffed by certified school librarians.
This is not a new fight for the union, which has unsuccessfully tried "half a dozen times" to include the measure in its contract with the district, Jordan said.
Dolores Solomon, president of the district's Home and School Association, said parents could make the difference.
"Parents always play a very important part in any issue pertaining to the children," she said.
By involving parents, "this will spark the light to bring awareness to the situation," she said. "Our children are in need of libraries in each and every school, not just some schools."
The district's director of integration instruction, Lois McGee, who works with library-content specialists, said the district pushes for libraries.
"We've been advocating for strong libraries programs in all our schools since Dr. Ackerman came in," she said, referring to Superintendent Arlene Ackerman, who joined the district in 2008. McGee described libraries as "that link that would close the opportunity and achievement gap."
She added that content specialists have been added as extra support in the libraries of the district's six Promise Academies, schools receiving closer attention from the district.

ATLANTA — A new government report on sexually spread diseases shows gonorrhea in the United States has dipped to the lowest rate ever recorded.
But chlamydia and syphilis infections continued to increase last year. That's according to a report released Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The agency says there are roughly 19 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases annually.
Gonorrhea dropped to 301,000 cases, the lowest rate since reporting began in 1941.
Chlamydia reached another record high with 1.2 million cases. It's an easily treatable infection, mostly in young women. Officials attribute the increase to more and better screening. Syphilis inched up again to 14,000 cases.

NBC Universal-owned USA Network has added a new social layer to its ongoing Character Project initiative, a cause-related extension of its "Characters Welcome" brand. In the hopes of fostering tolerance and respect among people from all walks of life, the TV home to shows like "Monk" and "Burn Notice" launched a new campaign Monday featuring a Facebook game and other social media components.
The goal is to encourage people to pledge to "stand against intolerance, prejudice, discrimination and hate, and to promote greater understanding and acceptance" through the CharactersUnite.com site. For each pledge, USA will donate $1 to its nonprofit partners, a wide collection of organizations including the National Council of La Raza, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the American Federation of Teachers.
"I believe life is richer and we are stronger as a country when we see beyond stereotypes and appreciate each other for the characters we are," states the pledge. Donations will be made during "Characters Unite Month," which runs through December 24, according to USA's calendar.

KSL Capital Partners LLC entered into the agreement to acquire the majority of the shares of the Squaw Valley Development Co. in a deal that includes the California resort's ski operations, the Village at Squaw Valley and related real estate holdings, Squaw Valley President and CEO Andy Wirth said.

Eric Resnick, KSL's co-founder and managing director, said the Denver-based firm specializing in travel and leisure was enticed by the history and potential of what has become one of the largest and best known ski resorts in the world since it opened in 1949.
Its founder, Alexander C. Cushing, was credited with helping launch the sport in the United States by landing the 1960 Winter Games.
"With Squaw Valley USA, Alex Cushing made a profound impact on the snow sports industry, and we're honored to build upon the resort's legacy," Resnick said in a statement.
KSL's properties include Vail Mountain Lodge in Vail, Colo., The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.; Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, Texas; and Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.
