 It's been a holiday tradition since 1955 and the 2010 edition of the NORAD Santa Tracker is up an running.    And yes, it even has an app for your phones as well.

The tradition started as the result of a Colorado Springs, CO based Sears placing an advertisement in the local newspaper that included a phone number that kids could call to talk to Santa.
However, the number in the printed ad was incorrect.   The calls meant for Santa ended up going to CONAD (the Continental Air Defense Command), the forerunner of NORAD. 
On the night a December 24, 1955 the officer on duty that night, Colonel Harry Shoup, instructed his personnel to give all children who called in that night a current location for Santa oday it has morphed into the corporate sponsored NORAD Tracks Santa program which uses volunteers from Cheyenne Mountain and Peterson AFB.   The program also has Facebook and Twitter pages and is responsible for the Santa reports you see included in your local news outlet's Christmas Eve weather forecasts.

NORAD also known North American Aerospace Defense Command is considered a bi-national U.S Canadian Military organization which is responsible for the aerospace and maritime defense of the USA and Canada. This organization has employed all its hi tech equipment to follow Father Christmas as he and his reindeer travel the globe to give his Christmas gifts.

“There are a lot of people who follow this in different ways,” said by Lt. Desmond James, a public affairs offices of NORAD. Apparently, all the staff in the organization answer almost 100,000 phone calls and even receive more than 140,000 emails during Christmas eve from families around the world who want to track where is Santa Claus now.
Meanwhile, the NORAD coordinates with Santa’s Elf launch staff just to confirm his launch time. A NORAD staff also said that Santa’s route might be affected by weather conditions so its possible that the tracker rill be unpredictable. NORAD also claim that they employ high tech radar and satellites just to track the infrared signal given off by Rudolf’s nose.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has employed all its hi-tech equipment to follow Father Christmas as he, and his reindeer, travel the globe delivering presents.
Since its development three years ago, the Norad Father Christmas Tracker has become an internet sensation with close to a two billion hits.
Children can track Father Christmas through social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, and TroopTube.
His progress can also be tracked with three dimensional "Father Christmas Cams". Google will use its mapping service to give up-to-the-date analysis on where he is. This year will include streaming video of his journey for the first time.
